MIDTOWN - Recover - Day of the Fight
Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth
07-11-02

Beth sorted out tickets for this one after I saw they were playing when I went down on Sunday for the Golf Records tour. I had heard mixed reports about Midtown, mainly from people who owned the Midtown/Millencolin split and said that Midtown were crap and that Millencolin pissed all over them. I'd heard a song on Tom's Atticus clothing CD and thought they weren't too bad. I turned up on time for once to find all of Not Katies (except Luke the drummer) had also made the trip from Southie.

The two support bands were a bit samey, with their own take on the emo-punk thing. They both seemed to dress like the Strokes and have mad hair like At The Drive-In. I think one was English and one American, or maybe both English I'm not sure. The songs were melodic in places and then quickly switched into crashing drop-D-ed chords with howling vocals over the top. I was beginnig to wonder why they were supporting pop-punkers Midtown when they finished and the headliners came on.

Midtown arrived on stage and the entire crowd moved forward forming a cluster in front of the stage. The Wedgewood Rooms were very busy, moreso than on Sunday, and as the band began playing they formed a nice circle pit near the front. They started with a couple of old favourites from "Save The World Lose The Girl" such as Living In Spite, which were belted out to a very appreciative audience. Then they moved on to some from their latest, "Living Well Is The Best Revenge". Find Comfort In Yourself was amazing, I don't know how the guy can sing and play bass so well! Then they did a great instrumental track which I've looked high and low for but can't seem to find, and a cover of God Gave Rock and Roll to You. "Like A Movie" followed, which although it sounds a bit New Found Glory-ish has some great quiet moments. They continued with another quiet thoughtful number and then went out in style with Just Rock And Roll, with the whole audience shouting "God I wish I could hate you for the rest of my life!". Midtown are on Drive-Thru (who they had a very public spat with this year), and although it's true they sound like other Drive-Thru bands such as NFG and The Movielife they don't ruin it with annoying whiney vocals and can give it a bit of attitude when needed.
